Those Mysterious Haw Flakes

There is something distinctively childlike about these flakes. They remind me of how coins are stacked to a ringgit's worth at the bank, neatly arranged for the teller's disbursements to customers. Or the stack of white paper wrapped coins released into the cash registers by shopkeepers at the old kopitiams (coffee shops).

The taste brings back memories of childhood. Funnily, till today, many (including yours truly) are still baffled by what it actually is. We only know that it is sweet, sticky to the molar and a damn good snack at the right portion for the guilt-ridden sweet-tooth. Everyone who has eaten these, have their unique way of savouring these mysterious discs. Some meticulously separate each slice to be placed gingerly onto the tongue, never chewing. Those flakes would take their time to bend and break within the warm moistness of the mouth. Some chew vigorously, for the instant tangy hit, come hell or stuck residue on those molars.

You can still find these, decades since they were last staples of kids growing up in the 80's. Just pop by any local (Malaysian) Chinese grocery store and ask.

Poll Results: 50% ate Haw Flakes as a child. 50% are still eating them.

Hi, I love these. I seldom get to eat them though. My mother used to buy for me bottles of haw juice. It's concentrated and you mix it with water like Sunquick. It's supposed to be cooling. Well at least they're not bitter..... lol

Alvin: They are classics, aren't they? I didn't rediscover them until quite recently. Yes, even their names.

Kayatan: Can you find them at Ang Moh Land?

Helen: Drinks? How do you make drinks out of them? Do you mean the fruit which they came from?

Pablopabla: It was a pleasure, that site of yours. Yes. Their major disadvantage - unreachable by the ordinary toothbrush.

Sunshine: You have two sites? Why? Isn't being talkative a sign of intelligence in a child?

Sharlydia: Er, what does that mean in cantonese?

Yes, I can get them in Chinese grocery store. I bought them in bulk whenever I went to Oriental store :).
Lots of Asians in my city cos it is a university city, lots of Chinese students from Mainland china doing their Ph.D and postdoc.
Lots of Chinese professors, docs and surgeons.
So we can get quite good fair range of oriental food :).

I looove this stuff. I used to play with my sisters, taking this as if it's the bread (communion thingy) during prayers. I noticed the size has shrunk but the taste is still as sweet as before:) Nice post!

the reviewer said...

Nessa: Could it be that the size shrunk because we grew bigger? Gee... I never realised they shrunk. Did they?

I didn't like them as a kid, but I didn't hate them either. If offered, I would take one or two pieces, but if not offered, I'd pretend I didn't see it on the table, LOL.

To be a good lenient being is to be enduring a philanthropic of openness to the far-out, an ability to group unsure things beyond your own pilot, that can front you to be shattered in hugely extreme circumstances for which you were not to blame.
